A Conversation with Danny Taylor of A Foot in Coldwater.

As one of handful of Canadian artists to have success on Canadian radio before and after Canadian Content Regulations became law in 1971, Danny Taylor of A Foot In Coldwater has a place in Canadian music history.

Taylor co-write one of the the staples of Canadian classic rock radio, Make Me Do Anything You Want, (#2 August 1972 in Hamilton; see below). Bob Mersereau lists the song at #44 in his book The Top 100 Canadian Singles. Neal Peart of Rush lists him among the greatest Canadian drummers. Great praise indeed.

Before A Foot in Coldwater, Taylor was also a member of The Lords of London (Cornflakes and Ice Cream, #1 on CHUM in August of 1967) while still in high school in 1967. Some members of that band would go on to form the heavy rock band Nucleus (Communication) in 1969. Then, members of Nucleus would form A Foot in Coldwater.

The debut album from A Foot in Coldwater was released in January 1972. It would go Top 10 in Hamilton (see above Top 30 Albums). I had a chance to talk with Danny Taylor early in 2015. We not only reminisced about the 43rd anniversary of the album and the heritage/legacy of the band, but also about A Foot in Coldwater concert at a political rally at Gage Park in Hamilton. You can hear the interview here on Mixcloud. The conversation was a truly enjoyable journey through the early days of Canadian content on AM/FM radio.

Wow, what a fantastic interview! A fine job, Danny!
Some really interesting stuff, a lot of which was previously unknown to me, for example, the recording engineer.
The political rally story is hilarious!
Sad hearing about the disagreements between the band's management and Anthem Records.
In spite of all this, "Breakin' Thru" is still one of my favourite albums.
Cheers,
Chris
